percussion instruction

MPmarimba

What makes MPmarimba unique?
MPmarimba does not just focus on music lessons. We lay the basis for you or your child’s music education and provide a full range of musical instruction. Mpmarimba provides a supportive, non-judgmental environment for all students in a family-friendly setting.

What is the total percussion concept?
Total percussion recognizes that most percussionists must be prepared to play any and all instruments in the percussion family including snare drum, mallet instruments, timpani, drum set, concert accessories, and instruments from around the world. Matt remembers the fascination he felt at first being exposed to the sheer variety of percussion instruments. His studio and teaching philosophy are designed to awaken this feeling in all of his students

Within the total percussion concept students are encouraged to explore and focus on their primary interests from drum set, ragtime xylophone and jazz vibraphone, and classical marimba or percussion. Studies on all instruments are designed to address the interests of the student while providing a broad base for musical and personal growth.

What are the rate for lessons with Matt?
For 2021 rates are $60 per hour or $45 per half hour.

Are scholarships available?
A limited number of partial scholarships and work study opportunities are available based on income and interest/aptitude. Ask Matt about completing an application. All information and awards are strictly confidential.

Why is it called MPmarimba?
Like most percussionists, Matt is skilled in the full range of percussion instruments while also focusing on one primary instrument. Matt’s primary percussion instrument is the marimba.

I’m already experienced with percussion instruction and prefer to have lessons only on my primary instrument—is that ok?
Yes, for experienced students who meet instructional criteria, MPmarimba will provide instruction on the percussion instrument of your choice.

What if I need to miss or reschedule a lesson?
Mpmarimba understands that scheduling conflicts can arise. Please call Matt at (608) 719-2697 as soon as possible to notify him of your absence. Make up times will be given for excused lessons only. Please see our policies for the full make up policy.

What if the teacher cancels a lesson?
If Matt has to cancel a lesson, an alternative, mutually compatible date and time will be scheduled.

Can I/my child practice at the MPmarimba studio?
Mpmarimba is not able to offer practice space or practice instruments. Efforts will be made to explore options for instrument purchase or rental with each student.

Where can I purchase percussion instruments and music?
Steve Weiss Music and Lone Star Percussion are national percussion retailers with speedy shipping and excellent service. They stock a full range of equipment and often ship on the same day the order is placed.

Craigslist can be an excellent resource for instruments but please invlove me in your purchase - percussion instruments come in many shapes and sizes and having the correct instrument is important to you or your child's learning experience.

Are there performance opportunities for students?
There will be several recitals throughout the year; other performance options may also become available.

What forms of payment do you accept?
Payment can be made by exact cash or check. Unless other arrangements have been made, payment for the month is due at the first lesson of each month. Payment by cash or check helps to keep our fees (and yours) low!
